Mr. Lamido Abubakar Yuguda assumed office as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on 11 May 2026. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Yuguda served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC) from 2020 to 2024, where he provided strategic leadership in strengthening the regulatory framework of Nigeria’s capital market, enhancing investor protection, and advancing initiatives aimed at deepening market development and improving overall market integrity. Mr. Yuguda brings to the Central Bank of Nigeria over three decades of professional experience spanning central banking, international financial institutions, and capital market regulation. He commenced his career at the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1984 as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department, and subsequently served in several strategic capacities across the Bank. During this period, he contributed to key policy and operational initiatives in areas including banking supervision, external debt management, and reserve management. In 1997, he joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C., where he served as an Economist in the Africa Department for four years. In that capacity, he participated in the assessment of macroeconomic policies and the implementation of balance of payments support programmes for member countries. Upon his return to the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2001, he played a key role in strengthening the Bank’s foreign reserve management framework and subsequently served as Director of the Reserve Management Department, where he led initiatives to diversify and enhance the management of Nigeria’s external reserves. He retired from the Bank in 2016 after 32 years of distinguished service. Mr. Yuguda holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, obtained in 1983, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, obtained in 1991. He also holds a Certificate in Financial Asset Management and Engineering from the Swiss Finance Institute, Geneva, and a Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement from the CFA Institute. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charterholder and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) as well as the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). Over the course of his career, he has participated in executive leadership and management programmes at leading global institutions, including Harvard Business School, INSEAD, IMD Business School, Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford, the Wharton School, Haas School of Business, Kellogg School of Management, Chicago Booth School of Business, and London Business School. Mr. Yuguda has also served as a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of several prominent financial institutions, including the Africa Finance Corporation, the National Pension Commission Nigeria, and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria. He is widely regarded as a seasoned financial sector professional with extensive expertise in reserve management, financial markets, macroeconomic policy, and financial sector regulation.
